Say It Like Seoul

흑형 What does 흑형 mean in Korean?

heuk-hyeong Use With Care Controversial, avoid

Meaning

Literally “Black big brother.” Slang for a Black man, often used about athletes, musicians and dancers.

People who use it often think it sounds friendly or admiring, as in “the Black guys are so good at basketball.” But it lumps people together by skin color and repeats stereotypes about rhythm, strength or physique. That’s why many Black people living in Korea say they find it uncomfortable or offensive.

Where it comes from

흑heuk · black
형hyeong · older brother (said by men)
흑형“Black big bro,” spread through online sports and music communities

Why it’s controversial

Even when it’s meant as a compliment, it reduces a person to their skin color. Many Black people in Korea have said they would rather be called by their name, and the word often comes up in Korean discussions about everyday racism. You’ll still hear it, so it’s worth knowing what it means, but it’s better not to use it yourself.

What to say instead

흑인 · Black person (neutral)흑인 남성 · Black man (neutral)이름 · best of all, just use the person’s name
그 선수 정말 잘한다. That player is really good. (praise the person, not their race)
제 친구는 나이지리아 사람이에요. My friend is Nigerian. (use the nationality if it matters)
